5 Thanksgiving Recipes That Are Not Turkey

October 02, 2015     bacon, Beef, dessert, Featured, holiday, List, pork, turkey     No comments

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we've already started thinking about what to cook for the holiday season.  If you're looking for an alternative to turkey or a side dish to complement your bird, here are five tried and true recipes from our blog:

Thanksgiving Ham with Apple Bacon Chutney
This recipe elevates the Thanksgiving ham with a delicious apple bacon chutney.  Both sweet and savoury, the chutney both compliments and adds another dimension to each bite of ham.  Recipe here.
Bacon and Mushroom Thanksgiving Strata
This Italian 'strata' is essentially a savoury bread pudding flavoured with cheese, bacon, mushrooms and caramelized onions. Although not a traditional stuffing, this side more than makes up for it with the perfect blend of earthiness from the mushrooms, caramelized onions and richness of the cream and smoky bacon. Recipe here.
Cornbread and Sausage Stuffing
This recipe uses cornbread which gives the stuffing a wonderful texture and sweetness to balance the savouriness of the bacon and sausage.  The cornbread is also amazing for soaking up that puddle of gravy on your plate so you're guaranteed every bit of gravy goodness gets in your belly.  Recipe here.
Roasted Beef Tenderloin and Carmelized Onion Gravy
If you're sick of the traditional turkey, here's a beef alternative.  This recipe is equally as satisfying as a turkey with the caramelized onion gravy and makes for fantastic left overs.
Recipe here.
Sticky Toffee Pudding
If you're not a huge pumpkin fan, here's a different dessert to try.  I discovered a fantastic recipe for sticky toffee pudding last year and made it for Thanksgiving.  The cake is moist from the dates and the toffee sauce rich and decadent; needless to say, it was a hit.  Also, I feel like baking anything in a bundt pan makes your creation ten times more impressive.  Recipe here.
We hope these recipes were useful and at the very least gave you some inspiration for Thanksgiving this year!

...Turkey Apple Meatballs

August 01, 2015     Pasta, toddler, turkey     No comments

Our girl turned one last week and we are coming to terms with the fact that she is no longer a baby but a toddler.  Where did the time go?  I'm sure all parents wonder the same thing.  The thing about a toddler, especially ours, is they keep you very busy.  For this reason, the blog has been somewhat neglected.  We are however, giving little updates on our food adventures on Twitter and Instagram @dcfortheloveof- so check us out there if you aren't already.  In the meantime, here is a quick turkey apple meatball recipe we have been utilizing that our little one loves but also is delicious for the adults.

Ingredients (approx. 2 dozen medium sized meatballs)
-1 lb package of ground turkey
-1 apple, minced
-1 onion, minced
-3 cloves garlic, minced
-2/3 cup panko crumbs (this makes them super soft, if you want firmer meatballs, add less panko)
-1/3 cup milk
-1 egg
-3 tbsp basil, finely chopped
-Grated parmesan for garnish (optional)

Method

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.  Sauté the onions and apple until soft.  Add the garlic near the end and cook for another minute or two.  Cool the mixture in a large bowl.
2. Add to the mixture, the panko, milk, egg and basil.  Using a large spoon, combine the mixture until combined.

3.  Make medium sized meatballs by rolling the mixture between your hands or using two spoons as I like to do, since the turkey mixture can be very sticky.  Place them on a baking sheet lined with foil and greased with oil.
4.  Give the meatballs a light drizzle of oil and place them in the oven for 20-30 minutes until cooked and golden on the outside.

5.  Serve the meatballs in pasta sauce or if you baby prefers, as is.

Enjoy!
