First unveiled half a decade ago, the design of Apple's original AirPods was widely mocked – mainly thanks to their not inconsiderable stems. Skip forward four years, and it seems Apple has clearly had the last laugh – it's impossible to walk down the street without spotting all manner of AirPods. 

But if rumours are anything to go by, that once-maligned, now iconic stem could soon be no more, with the AirPods Pro 2 switching to a rounded, in-ear design. AirPods Pro 2: Design

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed the new Pros will feature "an entirely new design that dispenses with the short stem that comes out of the bottom for a design similar to the Beats Fit Pro." Seasoned Apple leaker Mark Gurman made similar claims last year, along with suggesting the basic AirPods would adopt a design akin to the AirPods Pro. And as we now know, that was very much the case with the AirPods 3.

AirPods Pro 2: Features

Recent rumours have suggested Apple is working on a brand new audio transmission technology, which could end up replacing Bluetooth. Why? It could help the AirPods become the first headphones to offer truly lossless sound quality. If this is the case, the AirPods Pro 2 could well become the best-sounding wireless earbuds around.

In terms of security, Apple is said to be working on an impressive (and slightly terrifying) new feature in which the AirPods would be able to identify the user by the shape of their ear – or the gait of their walk. It all sounds a little dystopian to us, but hey – more security can only be a good thing. And then there are the truly weird rumours, such as Apple adding the ability to control your AirPods with your teeth (yes, you read that right).

AirPods 2: Release date

Kuo suggests the new AirPods Pro will arrive "in the last quarter of 2022". Although rumours have suggested a 2022 launch for a while, this is the first time we've been given a timeframe – and it seems AirPods Pro fans could have a while to wait.
